Programme Overview
Digitisation is reshaping Asia. Over the past two years, the region has witnessed an explosion in smartphone penetration, social media usage and ecommerce, with Asia now accounting for nearly 60% of the world’s online retail sales. This trend has been driven by a vast youth population of digital natives and supportive government policies to boost the digital economy and infrastructure.
Despite this, there are still an estimated 290 million unbanked adults in the ASEAN bloc. Only a third of workers receive their monthly wages into an account at a financial institution, with 71% paid in cash. The technology revolution has left many behind. What can be done to accelerate financial inclusion and close the digital divide? What are the economic advantages, commercial opportunities and digital dangers? And who are the new fintech players and social media influencers driving change?
This digital dialogue, hosted by the FT in partnership with Home Credit, brought fresh insights into financial literacy trends in Asia and observations from business leaders, academics and experts on how to rocketfuel the growth of an inclusive digital economy.
